Tweet-much
Social media has done so much for the role and voice of feminists involved in the Arab Spring as well other patriarchal government / societies so prevalent in countries around the world where democracy may be a far away dream or fledgling comparably to what we in the UK are lucky to have.
It has facilitated women to speak and to have a voice on pertinent issues not only pertaining to their right to drive a car, or wear a hijab but on politics, the regime that they and their fellow citizens are quashed under. In more ‘developed’ countries and I use the term loosely, women have taken up social media to fuel their business traffic, to engage with each other and others in a positive way, to voice their concerns over equality and to gain information and news about the world and their peers.
“What a brilliant tool we have found” we cry. Yet, I fear conversely for every woman, for every feminist there is using twitter, Facebook, blog to communicate valuable views and thoughts, there is one who will use it to her own detriment.
I don’t say this about women who tweet about shopping, shoes, weddings, men, hair, fashion etc etc. Although I’m not a fan of sharing my thoughts about many of these subjects, it’s in their interest and I’m in the interest of their followers. What I do find incredulous is the amount of women who spend a large amount of their time whinging or tweeting an utterly vapid commentary of the inner workings of their mind. We’ve all posted a comment once, twice maybe three times (a lady) about utterly banal things that no one else cares about by means of an outlet; however to spend a whole day talking about your period, how you hate your face, job, going to the toilet, the countless dates minute by minute breakdown, how you wish you weren’t you etc. That’s just a sign of laziness and boredom. Whinging gets you no where and neither does 400 tweets a day about your adult acne. There’s antibiotics for that. Find a cure. Act on finding a cure, rather than reticently tweeting, status updating your woes.
Is this symptomatic of western society? Are these truly our problems?
*Of course it is truly ones free will as to what they share and rightly so, as is my right to question, debate and argue or ultimately unfollow. This is just comment on what I have seen or experienced and by no means a judgement on any individual person*
Why not share some of the most ‘too much information’ tweets or updates you have seen as comments to this post.
